MEMORIES: Recap of ECG Season 13

The ECG (Extreme Cosplay Gathering) is a major international cosplay competition, bringing together participants from over 20 countries each year. On Ichigo, the main stage of Japan Expo, these artists bring their characters to life through spectacular performances. Let’s take a look back—through images and emotions—at the standout acts from the 13th edition of this unmissable cosplay event.

On Saturday, July 5 at 5:15 PM, as the closing of the festival drew near, the audience gathered with anticipation for what promised to be an unforgettable cosplay evening.

Those who arrived early were treated to a special opening performance by the CoSA association, kicking off the event in style.

Without further delay, the jury made their entrance on stage, each in stunning cosplay:

  • Yuji Koi, as Mao Mao (The Apothecary Diaries)
  • Yugoro, as Aela the Huntress (Skyrim)
  • Vye, as Anaxa (Honkai: Star Rail)
  • Spicy Thai Design, as Zuko (Avatar: The Last Airbender / The Legend of Korra)
  • Cutiepiesensei, as Magik (New Mutants)

What an irony for a firebender… having to snif out the flame of one more candle!
As soon as he arrived, SpicyThaiDesign was met with a heartwarming surprise: the entire audience stood up in unison to sing a cheerful “Happy Birthday”, just moments before he took his seat on the jury panel.

But after this joyful moment came a more bittersweet note: unfortunately, South Africa was unable to attend this year’s event in Paris.
Their absence was deeply felt — but there’s good news: Pamikin will keep her qualification and proudly represent her country… next year!

PORTUGAL
Yukirinha - Marie Antoinnette (Rose of Versailles)

The first performance of the evening set the tone with a musical number!
A powerful crescendo unfolded, exploring the singular fate of the former monarch of Versailles.
It all began in the Queen’s garden, during a whimsical tea party, where she served cake to her porcelain dolls, famously exclaiming, “Let them eat cake!”
But the scene quickly took a darker turn — the set slowly crumbled into blood-soaked chaos, the tempo quickened, and the lights finally went out to the chilling sound of the guillotine.

BULGARIA
Penumbra - Emily
(Corpse Bride)

On the screen, a shadowy silhouette appears… and releases Emily from her sarcophagus.
What follows is a macabre dance, led by a seamstress reduced to nothing but skin wrapped in bones. Cloaked in flowing black fabrics that obscure her figure, she masterfully manipulates strings to animate props that have become her limbs.
A cadaverous presence, so haunting it’s enough to make you lose — just like her — your eyeballs!

NETHERLANDS
LinkeLizzy & Fissagod - Aang & Kiyoshi (Avatar : le dernier maître de l'air)

Aang, the reincarnation of Avatar Kyoshi, is confronted with a heavy burden from the past: he stands accused of the crimes committed by his former self.

He pleads innocence and enters a deep meditation, reaching out across the spirit world… and manages to connect with Kyoshi herself.

She bursts onto the stage — and far from denying the accusations, she boldly claims them. With regal confidence and fierce determination, she justifies every action, unleashing the full force of her power: water, earth, fire, and air, tearing the temple apart in a spectacular display.

Back in the present, Aang awakens to find the temple in ruins… and receives his punishment: cleaning up Japan Expo all by himself — broom in hand!

COSTA RICA
Psycho Crush - Odyssey Jinx (League of Legends)

Bursting out of the shadows with her signature manic grin, Jinx makes one thing clear: she’s here to ruin someone’s day — anyone’s!
Behind the cosplayer, the League of Legends map comes to life, revealing champions who are instantly marked as targets by the wild trigger-happy menace.

In a fast-paced action sequence, she brings Jinx’s explosive gameplay to the stage, unleashing chaos and mayhem — relentlessly firing at an unfortunate Ichigo until the final Game Over hits.

SPAIN
Galefic, Madoka & Ariel Van De Kamp - Beetlejuice & Lydia Deetz (Beetlejuice)

A single candle glimmers in the darkness… Lydia steps onto the stage, slowly approaching her crystal ball.

With it, she summons Beetlejuice, who bursts from his coffin akin to the animated series' intro!

Without missing a beat, the striped specter drops a marriage proposal — sudden, inappropriate, and oh-so-Beetlejuicy.
In a flash, the first Lydia is trapped in a giant wedding ring and vanishes, replaced by a second cosplayer now embodying Lydia in a fiery red wedding dress!

What follows is a musical kidnapping, set to the lively rhythm of "Shake Shake Señora" by Harry Belafonte — until the chaos is cut short by the sudden appearance of the iconic sandworm on screen.

With one swift bite, the creature devours Beetlejuice… and sends him straight back to the afterlife!

ITALY
Shadowings & Ormadigatto - Mme.Samovar & Lumière (La Belle & la Bête)

The Italian duo wowed the audience with the outstanding quality of their costumes — stunning gijinka-style (anthropomorphized) versions of the unforgettable chandelier and teapot from Beauty and the Beast.

With flair and elegance, our Italian friends brought the magic to life through dance, performing the iconic song everyone knows and loves:
“Be Our Guest!”

POLAND
Talon & Bish - Crusader & Plague Doctor (Darkest Dungeon II)

A battle-worn knight and a masked doctor descend into the eerie depths of a gloomy dungeon. Their serious appearances, however, don’t stop them from delivering a delightfully cartoonish performance!

From the moment they appear, Talon & Bish dive headfirst into classic cartoon tropes — crashing through walls and leaving cut-out silhouettes behind, accompanied by sound effects straight out of Scooby-Doo. The tone is set!

In a light-hearted and playful atmosphere, the two heroes fumble their way through a tutorial: recovering their weapons, forging a flaming sword, and ultimately defeating the on-screen monster with a spectacular finishing blow.

With their quest complete and their show-stopping mission accomplished, the duo wraps it all up with a triumphant high five!

DANMARK
Amalia, TinYasuo & Luciotic - Claudia, Sir Sparkpluff & Aavaros (The Dragon Prince)

Lost in a mysterious forest, Claudia embarks on a quest to find her father. Along the way, she encounters Sir Sparkpluff, a strange but benevolent creature who guides her to Aavaros, an enigmatic elf holding the key to save her father from certain death.

But salvation comes at a price: Aavaros manipulates Claudia into a sacrificial ritual, urging her to take the life of Sparkpluff...

The cosplayers captivated the audience with a performance both narrative and atmospheric. The set and props were cleverly used: an altar gradually revealing itself, blood-red confetti simulating a dramatic outpouring, Aavaros’s ghostly presence haunted the stage, and the giant Ichigo screen shifted from an enchanting forest to a blood-red moon, heightening the intensity of the moment.

CZECH REPUBLIC
Jules - Gaming (Genshin Impact)

Gaming receives a letter from his father, expressing disapproval of his life choices as a traditional Chinese dancer.
His response? A powerful wushou dance performed live on the Ichigo stage!

Guided by the rhythm of drums, Jules proudly embraces his character’s passion, executing the dragon dance with grace and determination.

UNITED STATES
Chikkupea - Celica (Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia)

Celica seeks to find the goddess Mila, reincarnated but sealed within her temple.
In the shadows, the priest Jedah whispers a solution: “A soul for a soul.” Only a sacrifice can bring Mila back and restore balance to the world.

Full of faith and courage, the warrior accepts this heavy burden. But at the moment of prayer, everything takes a dark turn: betrayed, she is chained by Jedah and trapped in a sinister ritual.

Celica is transformed against her will into a servant of Duma, becoming an evil entity that heralds the dawn of a new era of terror.

FINLAND
Tammukka - Hatsune Miku (Miku Expo 2023 VR, Toy Box)

At center stage stands an automaton, frozen and silent. Once its mechanism is activated, the doll comes to life.

Through robotic, jerky movements, Tammukka perfectly embodies the loneliness of her character — trapped in an unchanging cycle. Motionless and dependent on her winding key, the automaton is gradually abandoned, left alone as the lights fade to black.

But just as the audience erupts in applause, the machine suddenly powers back up and steps down from her pedestal, furious that her own abandonment is being celebrated!

GERMANY
Symphonia & Daiyame - Kena & Rusu (Kena : Bridge of Spirits)

The Germanic duo brilliantly portrayed the meeting between Kena and her mentor Rusu, delivering a performance that was both initiatory and spiritual.

Among all the participants, Symphonia & Daiyame stood out for the exceptional care they put into their set and props. Their immersion into the world of Kena: Bridge of Spirits was striking. Their mastery of the stage space and seamless interaction with the screen allowed for precise and magical moments that truly enhanced the experience.

At the climax of the show, a life-sized creature strode across the Ichigo stage, adding a spectacular touch to the performance and leaving the audience with a sense of awe.

SWITZERLAND
Gen, Rinn & Asura -  Kenshin Hiruma, Seta Sojiro & Makoto Shishio (Ruroni Kenshin)

More than just a cosplay show — a full-on chanbara spectacle!
Inspired by the live-action adaptation of Rurouni Kenshin, the Swiss trio made blades dance and took our breath away!

First, Kenshin discovers a wanted poster marking him as a target, followed by the fierce assault of Seta Sojiro, the swift blade of the Juppongatana.
With Jackie Chan-style interaction between the set and the action, Kenshin counters with the back of his sword before finally facing one of his most famous foes: Makoto Shishio.

The cult antagonist’s entrance was nothing short of spectacular, engulfing the entire Ichigo stage in flames!

UNITED KINGDOM
Opal Ink Cosplay & Kizuki - Atreus & Angrboda (God of War Ragnarok)

Atreus and Angrboda argue over who should do the chores—until they realize the seal protecting them from dark magic has been broken!
Only the blood of the undead can restore the barrier!

Atreus turns to face the screen, where a shadowy creature awaits. A fierce battle unfolds between the stage and the projection, until Atreus emerges victorious, holding the severed head of his enemy as a trophy.

All’s well that ends well—except for one small detail: the chores don’t do themselves!

FRANCE
Corneline - Galadriel (Le Seigneur des Anneaux)

The grand winner of ECG Season 13, Corneline graced the stage with a masterful portrayal of Galadriel’s prophetic ritual before her enchanted mirror.

Fueled by intense acting, a deeply immersive atmosphere, and flawless control of lighting and soundtrack, her performance steadily built in intensity, reaching near-transcendental heights.

The centerpiece mirror of Galadriel’s ritual hid an ingenious mechanism combining ventilation, smoke effects, and lighting, enhancing the magical illusion.

The performance captivated both the jury and the audience alike—it was absolute cinema!

SWEDEN
Nukleara & MemorizedCosplay - Cendrillon & Prince Charmant (Cendrillon)

The Swedish cosplayers reimagined the meeting between Cinderella and Prince Charming on a mysterious night at the ball.
Wearing two exquisitely crafted costumes that sparkled with a thousand lights, the couple danced until the stroke of midnight forced Cinderella to flee—without revealing her name.

She left behind only a single glass slipper.

ROMANIA
Blue Iguana - Odogaron Alpha (Monster Hunter World)

It’s monster hunting time, with dragon steak on the menu!
Blue Iguana treated us to a true tutorial on draconic barbecue, humorously wielding the flames of her fearsome scaly foes to cook her meat to perfection.

With a simple, lighthearted, and friendly tone, she almost makes us forget the complexity of the cosplayer’s armor!

BELGIUM
Storms & Shienra - Freyr & Freya (God of War Ragnarok)

A mythological reunion on Scandinavian soil: Freyr enters the scene, boasting about his exploits and claiming heroic courage.
But the moment he spots his sister Freya, his confidence falters. He jumps, stammers… and can’t even finish his stories!

Amused, Freya challenges him to prove his bravery in a sibling duel. But no luck—Freyr prefers rather weild his lute over his sword!

AUTRICHE
Kyuubivi - Mercy Atlantic Skin (Overwatch)

Even doctors need a break. At least, that’s what Mercy hoped, determined to enjoy some downtime without having to heal anyone!

But little did she expect (the lifeless dummy of) Genji, who endlessly repeats in his pre-recorded voice: “I need healing,” “I require healing”…
Frustrated, Mercy finally gives in and heals Genji—only for him to hurt himself again two seconds later.

Played like a perfect comedy sketch, this final act of the ECG won over the audience with its flawless timing, sparking laughter at every turn.
